Every year we get feedback from our paddlers about how much fun they have and what a great experience it is. By paddling, you are enabling swimmers to participate in one of the top open water swims in the nation. And it is also a fund raiser for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poweredbypartners.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Partners Mentoring Youth<\/a>, in Fort Collins, CO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>Paddler Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paddlers need to supply their own water craft.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may use any non-motorized water craft: canoe, kayak, paddle board (SUP), row boat. &nbsp;There are some limitations on SUP and rowboat use. &nbsp;Ask us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paddlers must be familiar with the water craft they are using.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paddlers must have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each boat occupant plus a PFD for the swimmer. This means if you have 2 paddlers, you need 3 PFDs. &nbsp;Boat occupants should (must) wear their PFDs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paddlers must be physically able to paddle for up to 5 hours without stopping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>Safety Information and Rules for All Paddlers, All Races<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not bring a swimmer into your boat. This may (and has) capsized the paddler boat, which then adds 1 or more people who need to be rescued.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are confident about the stability of your boat, you may have the swimmer hold onto the boat. The best locations for this are the bow or stern of the boat. This is not recommended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should a&nbsp;swimmer need assistance, throw the swimmer a PFD and signal a rescue craft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signal for help by blowing your whistle \u2013 three (3) short blasts indicates emergency \u2013 and raising your paddle into the air and waving it back and forth. &nbsp;The Larimer County Dive Rescue team will be watching and listening for these signals and will come to help. &nbsp;If you see a paddler signaling for help, please pass this signal to the nearest Dive Rescue boat. &nbsp;They may not be able to see\/hear the signaling!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, paddlers should not wave their paddle in the air to signal to a friend on shore. A waved paddle will bring Dive Rescue rushing to your rescue unnecessarily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not a referee for the swim. &nbsp;However, try to encourage swimmers to not break the rules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be alert for signs\/symptoms of a swimmer having troubles. &nbsp;This might be due to exhaustion or hypothermia or another cause. With later stages of exhaustion or hypothermia the swimmer\u2019s judgement is often impaired and they will rely on you to make decisions. &nbsp;Here is an interesting article&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zwemza.com\/?p=26943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on the signs of drowning<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always be aware of where other paddlers and swimmers are with respect to you. &nbsp;Please avoid paddler\/paddler or paddler\/swimmer collisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>Information for 10k Race Paddlers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your swimmer is a first-time Horsetooth 10k swimmer, you and the swimmer must attend the Orientation\/Safety Meeting on Saturday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a Rover, you must attend the Orientation\/Safety Meeting on Saturday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a paddler for a swimmer you don&#8217;t know, you must attend the Orientation\/Safety Meeting on Saturday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There will be a pre-race (morning) meeting for all paddlers at 6:30 am to go over last minute details and update all on the course and course safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10k Swimmer Escort Paddlers:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paddlers should ideally place themselves between the swimmer and any boat traffic. &nbsp;At inlets to coves and especially at the inlet to Marina Bay (where there is a lot of boat traffic) stay close to your swimmer. &nbsp;You are there to provide visibility to other boats; &nbsp;you are much easier to see than the swimmer.&nbsp; Drafting is not allowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be familiar with the course, you will be more aware of where you are relative to the finish line than the swimmer. &nbsp;Your goal is to guide the swimmer on the straightest line possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your swimmer within 5 to 10 boat lengths of the shore. &nbsp;This is for everyone\u2019s safety as normal boat traffic will be present during the race.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a plan with your swimmer for how to communicate \u2013 if the swimmer is veering off-course, how will you signal or guide the swimmer back on course?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a plan with your swimmer for how to provide nutrition\/hydration: &nbsp;how often does the swimmer want to stop and feed? &nbsp;How will you signal the swimmer it\u2019s time to stop? &nbsp;How will you hand off and retrieve food and water\/drink? &nbsp;The swimmer may&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;touch your boat!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of what coves you are passing and only enter the coves designated as part of the race course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To ensure a full 10k distance, swimmers will swim into a small cove immediately after the start. &nbsp;Paddlers will&nbsp;not&nbsp;follow the swimmers into the cove. &nbsp;Paddlers will travel down the shoreline and meet up with the swimmer as they exit Satanka Cove.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10k Roving Safety Paddlers:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your job is to help with&nbsp;communication up and down the line of swimmers, to fill in for a paddler if they are unable to be with their swimmer (capsize, have to get out, etc), to signal for Dive Rescue in case of an emergency, and in general provide overall safety for the entire race course. &nbsp;You\u2019ll be doing lots of paddling!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>Information for 2.4\/1.2 Mile and Youth Races Paddlers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may be assigned to a specific location on the course or as a safety patrol along the course. &nbsp;Generally you will be responsible for a specific area or zone on the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your job is to ensure swimmers stay on course, to watch for motor boat traffic and keep swimmers safe, to watch for swimmers in distress and to signal for Dive Rescue in case of emergency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There will be a pre-race (morning) meeting for all paddlers at 6:30 am to go over last minute details, to update everyone on the course and to assign positions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>General Info<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Things to consider bringing in your boat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sunscreen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sunglasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweatshirt\/sweat pants\/fleece (or other warm clothing)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raincoat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food\/water for yourself (in addition to the swimmer\u2019s)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the weather is cold or wet, bring hot fluids to drink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whistle (provided by the race committee)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Map (provided by the race committee)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GPS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cell phone (some service is available on the water)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camera<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Towel(s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Have fun! &nbsp;Horsetooth is a nice place to paddle \u2013 to enjoy the scenery as well as watching all those crazy swimmers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a fun article from one of our long-time volunteer paddlers.&nbsp; It gives you an idea of what it\u2019s all about.&nbsp; From the Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club publication,&nbsp;<em>The Mountain Paddler<\/em>, Vol. 25, No. 2b, Fall 2017 \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horsetoothswim.comwp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/RMSKC-Newsletter-Fall-2017-Hustvedt-Kayak-Support.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cHorsetooth Open Water Swim Support\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-text-color\" style=\"color:#212f64\"><strong>Canoe\/Kayak\/SUP Rental Shops<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following shops in Fort Collins rent canoes and\/or kayaks and\/or stand-up paddle boards (web links updated on 4\/1\/23):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rocky Mountain Adventures<\/strong><br>1117 N.
