I have many fond memories of swimming in the lakes, rivers and waters around England, Northern Ireland and North America. Long distance open-water swimming is an excellent way to get fit, to visit beautiful and interesting parts of the world and to challenge and learn more about oneself. In my experience, the sport is filled with people of amazing strength, courage and humility.
I started this race for two reasons: to bring long distance open-water swimming to Fort Collins, and to highlight the work of Wingshadow. To swim the 10km length of Horsetooth reservoir is a daunting prospect for most of us; however, it pales in comparison when placed next to the trials that some of the youth of Northern Colorado face each and every day: no family, no education, no hope. My dream is that this swim will serve not only to create enthusiasm in people for a sport that I love, but also to act as a beacon to those less fortunate in our community.
